How GenZ is Influencing the Future of Fashion with Depop’s Head of Sustainability Justine Porterie

This session first aired during the 2022 Sustainable Fashion Forum and made accessible on our YouTube to the SFF community in partnership with Teen Vogue.

Though concern over issues like social justice and climate change are not exclusive to younger consumers, GenZ is known for leading the charge against some of the most pressing issues of our time.

With strong opinions and even higher expectations regarding the brands they engage with, the views of GenZ (and millennial) consumers are critical to understanding. Younger generations have always played a role in creating and interpreting trends; however, as global connectivity continues to increase, GenZ's generational shift and mindset behaviors continue to influence people of all ages, consequently shifting brands and companies' priorities.

Well-informed about many real-life problems and the negative implications of fashion, GenZers view consumption and their relationships with brands differently than the generations before them.

With this in mind, brands are responding by integrating social and environmental themes into their products and services and rethinking their communication and marketing strategies to connect and build brand loyalty among the younger generation.

In this exclusive fireside chat, Depop's head of sustainability, Justine Porterie, and Teen Vogue editor-in-chief Versha Sharma discuss how GenZ is changing the way we shop and influencing the next decade of business practices. They also discuss what fashion can learn about genuine authenticity, diversity, and sustainability from the new kids on the block.
